Work stress isn’t fun, and it’s alarmingly common. New research shows 64 per cent of Australians are stressed at least once a week at work. Heavy workloads, unrealistic deadlines, working overtime, time pressures, miscommunication and lack of support can all contribute to work stress levels. Staying healthy at work is essential for your productivity and wellbeing, but jobs can inherently be difficult at times. If your work stress is getting on top of you, try these tips.
Prepare and plan
Staying organised through better planning will help you destress. If you manage your own workload, plan ahead to allow enough time to sufficiently get your work done. When other factors contribute to your workload, take advantage of your teammates around you and don’t be afraid to ask for a hand. If you create a reasonable schedule and with tasks to be completed on a daily basis, you can avoid feeling so overwhelmed. This will make work a little less stressful.
Physical activity is an extremely important function of our lives, especially if we are stressed. Research shows that physical activity can relieve stress and improve cognitive function (APA). Working out at the gym or going for a walk are great ways to stay active. If you don’t have time for these activities before or after work, perhaps try to incorporate some activity into your working day. Anything that will increase your heartbeat for a prolonged period of time is doing your health some good! Take the stairs instead of the lift. Use a toilet on a different floor. Walk further to a different cafe at lunchtime. It will give you an energy boost and clear your mind so you to focus on the job at hand when you get back to work.
Drink up on water! Staying hydrated is something many of us may forget to do. However, it is one of the most important factors of good health and energy. One of the best ways to get into the habit of drinking enough water is to keep a bottle of water on your desk or in your bag. If a water bottle is constantly by your side, you will be keeping hydrated and not even know it!
Take a break
Our bodies only have the capacity to focus and be productive for a certain amount of time. If you are stressed, skipping breaks to get the job done may actually be detrimental. Taking a break is significant to destress. Breaks enable you to disengage with work thoughts and allow you to come back refocused. Go outside for a walk and get some fresh air. Stepping into nature or even looking at it for a microbreak has been found to improve employee performance.
It is important to identify stress, so you can find ways to help manage it. These are all things you should do if you feel stressed at work, but remember to tell your manager, colleagues or friends if you’re feeling overly stressed and can’t manage it.
