A great morning routine sets the tone for the day, boost your energy levels, and is often seen as the key to a successful day. From waking up at the same time each day, to getting in some light exercise before work, read our top tips to perfect your morning routine.
Tip 1. Wake up at the same time each day
Working from home makes it easy to stay in bed right up until you start work. This is OK for days you’re in desperate need of some extra z’s, but don’t make it a habit. Waking up at the same time each day can improve your health and is a great way to get into a healthy sleep routine. From improved concentration and productivity to emotional stability through routine, waking up at the same time each day is a simple habit to form that will get your day off to a great start.
Tip 2. Go tech free when you first wake up
Studies have shown that checking your phone as soon as you wake up decreases productivity and can cause increased stress and anxiety. Checking social media, the news or work emails first thing can prime your brain for distraction for the remainder of the day and spike your stress levels. Instead, create a different ritual of what you will do when you first wake up such as drinking water, reading a chapter of a book or journaling. A meditation from the Insight Timer app is a great way to kickstart the day; there are thousands of free meditations available.
Tip 3. Get in some exercise
Getting in some exercise before you start work is a great way to start your day. Regular exercise has been found to boost energy, reduce fatigue and lead to overall better health. Plus, exercise releases endorphins that leave you feeling energised and ready to tackle your day. From walking around the block, getting in some yoga, or perhaps a quick HIIT workout, exercise is a must in your working-from-home morning routine. Try the FitOn app if you need some guidance – there are hundreds of excellent workouts, and they are all free.
Tip 4. Have a healthy breakfast
We’ve all heard before that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s true! A healthy breakfast before you start work can boost your energy, kickstart your metabolism and stimulate your brainpower, helping you to reason, process information and problem solve. Try a green smoothie filled with colourful fruit and veg, or some avo toast with eggs for added protein. You’ll find some other breakfast ideas here.
Tip 5. Write down your goals for the day
Writing a to-do list of what you would like to achieve for the day is a great way to stay motivated and on task. If a long list is a little daunting, break it up into smaller sections such as top priorities, slightly less important tasks and then those that would be a bonus if you found the time. Don’t forget to schedule some time for yourself during the day, as well as time for an activity you love such as baking or watching your favourite TV show.
